'Real Steel' was a film that not many people expected much from. Hollywood's running out of ideas fast and this is the first major film to be adapted from a game (not a video game. Luckily for Hollywood's sake it has worked. It's not the smartest film in the world, it can be a bit predictable but it does have some interesting aspects which really carry it as a whole. Unlike many typical films, not many of the characters are likable; Hugh Jackman plays a drunk, debt-riddled, nearly unemployed man who abandons his child at a young age and forgets about him almost instantly. As intended, he does begin to grow on you and Jackman plays this part very well, he convinces you easily in the beginning that he is not a nice man. Dakota Goyo is a breath of fresh air, his character is unique in the sense that he does not play your average cute little boy who says something insightful every half hour, he's sarcastic, cracks jokes, is confident and really does bring the film to life. The only main acting flaw I could see was Kevin Durand who's character was supposed to be the antagonist but really didn't have much on-screen presence.
The script is okay, it's predictable but it's certainly not bad. The dialogue is quite realistic and is often really funny, particularly between Jackman and Goyo. The plot is a bit interesting but the whole 'getting stuck with the kid' idea can become tiresome in films, luckily they managed to make it more interesting with the boy actually having a personality.
The CGI is mostly great but there are some parts where it is lacking something. The soundtrack works really well with this film and carries a lot of major scenes.
Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this film, especially if you have children they will love this. Adults can enjoy it too, it's funny, has a lot of action and keeps you interested.
